The roots of the Hacker's Tour can be traced to April 1996. We began as the Southern Golf Amateur Tour with John Childs as our tour director as we played our first event at the Peninsula in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Eventually, Casino Magic became our title sponsor as we evolved into the Casino Magic Amateur Tour.
That relationship lasted until approximately the winter of 1998. With the change of ownership at the casino, their sponsorship of the Tour was discontinued. By this time also, John Childs had become head pro at Solutia Golf Club in Pensacola and his new duties made it impossible to continue his work on the Tour. Consequently, the Tour lapsed into a two-year hiatus.
During that time, whenever I would see any of the Tour members they would constantly ask if the Tour was going to re-start. The friendships and the good times they had experienced in the formative years of the Tour convinced me to get the ball rolling.
Finally, in December 2000, The Hacker's Amateur Golf Tour was formed. We had an interim director serve for a few months and I took over as director in June of 2001. The Tour now conducts tournaments 11 times a year covering three different states.
